Goal Setting vs Intention Setting

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about a good way to explain the difference between a goal and an intention for you, as it’s a question I often get asked.  And last night just as my head was about to hit the pillow, a beautiful way to explain it popped into my mind. Don’t you love it when that happens?!

First, let’s look at the definitions:

Your goal is your desired outcome or result.

Whereas, your intention is your plan for getting there.

Now let’s look at an example:

Lets say, climbing to the top of a mountain is your goal. Your intention would be... how you plan on getting there.

Do you want to savour the walk to the top of the mountain?

Do you want your walk to be fun?

Do you want to flow with your body’s natural rhythm getting there?

Do you want to share the journey with a friend?

Do you want to go as fast as you can to the top of the mountain?

Do you want to go it alone?

Do you want to challenge yourself as much as possible?

These questions allow us to decide how we want to experience our journey to the top of the mountain. Which allows us to set intentions that are present moment focussed, feeling based and guide us on the actions we will choose to take to get there.

When we have clear intentions, the outcome we are really seeking on getting to the top of the mountain like feeling confident, energetic and free are more likely to manifest.

However, if we struggle our way up the mountain, not enjoying the journey, when we reach our desired destination on top of the mountain - we might end up feeling that the journey was not really worth it. You might feel tired, lonely and regret your journey altogether, realising being at the top of the mountain was never what you really wanted.

With clear intentions behind our goals we are able to better identify when the actions we need or choose to take to get there are not aligned with what we truly want. Which means we can course correct now, rather than waiting until we get to the top of the mountain ⛰ to figure out we never wanted to get there anyway.

I hope this helps!

P.s that my friends is really a volcano.

Lots of love,

Me xoxo
