Something that baffled me in the early years of my working life was that most of the people around me seemed to be convinced that whatever they decided to do for work was not meant to be... fun.
I could never get my head around this. People would say: Trust me, you'll understand once you're older.
I guess to them I seemed like I was just an idealistic girl without any idea of the struggle of the real world.
Perhaps I did romanticise my understanding of what work could be and there were many times throughout my life that I wondered if that really were the truth of it, but something kept me believing that work really was meant to be something we enjoy.
It made sense to me that people do what made them happy. Don't we only want to work with, buy from and hire people who genuinely want to be there?
Instead, it seemed normal to watch people complain about how much they hated their job, to show up, but not truly turn up - and then do it all over again.
Why are people so willing to accept this for themselves?
I believe the answer boils down to that little 4 letter word behind all of our self-destruction: FEAR.
Fear of the unknown, fear of financial insecurity, fear of rejection, fear of disappointment and most importantly, fear of our own power.
But hear me out for a second... when we work in an area that we love, enjoy and are inspired by we are way more productive and not only just in our work, but in all other aspects of our lives - it energises us, rather than drains us.
We contribute to the world in a way that is meaningful because we are cultivating the environment for creativity - and with creativity comes innovation, solutions, progress.
And life is enjoyable, life is fun - we are inspired, so we inspire. We operate from a place of love and abundance, rather than fear & scarcity.
We shine our light and therefore reflect the light in others.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us. - Marianne Williamson
And this, my friends, is where discovering your purpose comes into play.
Purpose: the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. (Oxford Dictionaries)
Purpose provides us with a reason for being. A reason that is bigger than ourselves. It is our contribution to the world. A way to use our unique skills, experience, abilities and interests to serve. To take inspired action. To create. To lead.
What’s my wish for humanity? I wish that every single person on this planet is able to find work that is meaningful, fulfilling & in alignment with their unique purpose.
This to me is: work that one loves, enjoy & is soooooo inspired by.
Purpose & fulfilment are so intrinsically linked for us as humans. And that’s why when we aren’t on the right path, we feel the call. The call for more creativity, for more meaning, for more contribution, for more of something.. but what?
That’s the call for purpose and it underpins everything.
Purpose gives us a framework to work within. It makes life easier, not harder.
