ACTION #1: APPRECIATE
Are you feeling unfulfilled, lost or disconnected? ARE YOU fed up with feeling SAD, AFRAID OR JUST... IN A BIT OF A SLUMP LATELY?
How about we shift that energy right now by turning our minds and thoughts to what we CAN appreciate!
I appreciate all the love and support that I have in my life.
I appreciate my beautiful home.
I appreciate the sound of birds chirping outside my window.
I appreciate all the abundance I have in my life.
I appreciate the wonderful tribe of like-minded people I have around me.
I appreciate the loving, caring, genuine and supportive relationship I have with my partner.
I appreciate the beauty of flowers and the joy they add to my life.
I appreciate all the delicious fruit and vegetables in season at the moment.
I appreciate my smile and the love I emanate.
I appreciate my body.
SO, what's all the fuss about appreciation?
The practice of appreciation is a life-changing technique and it was one of the very first tools I learned along my "journey of rediscovery" (if you want to find out more about my journey, visit my About page here). This is because:
- when we turn our minds to what we appreciate, we immediately shift our energy from a place of scarcity to a place of abundance
- when we experience appreciation we cannot feel fear (....say what????!)
- when you appreciate you immediately shift your perspective from one of fear to one of love
- without appreciating what you already have in your life, you cannot make room for more
- by practising appreciation you shift your energy from a low, negative place to a high vibin’, positive place!
- the ripple effect of this practice to the people around us and our environment is magnificent.
With amazing benefits like these, it's no wonder almost every teacher I have had along my own journey of transforming my life has pointed me to the power of appreciation. Thankfully, it is also a very simple action to incorporate into your day to day life!
And because of this, it was the very first action I wanted to share with you on this journey. Have a go now and try it!
Action #1 TO CREATe A LIFE THAT IS BEAUTIFUL
Grab a blank piece of paper or open a blank document on your computer and spend the next 5-10 minutes writing down or typing out what you can appreciate (just like I did above). You can be as detailed as you like and you can be appreciative for things that you don't have in your life right now, but would like to have. For instance: I am appreciative of all the wonderful positive and supportive comments I will get from people reading this post :-) Let the feeling of appreciation that this exercise cultivates wash over you.
This exercise is called an "Appreciation Rampage". I learned this specific exercise through one of my favourite mentors, Jess Lively in her amazing podcast The Lively Show .
I guarantee that by doing this exercise you will immediately shift your energy into a positive, high vibin' place.
Imagine doing this simple exercise every day? Or, after every encounter you have with another person (what did you appreciate about the encounter)? Or, after you go to an event (what did you appreciate about the day)? Or, after every experience you have (what did you appreciate about this experience)? It allows you to see the good, the positive!
how i practise APPRECIATION
I actively turn my mind to appreciation every single day as part of my morning and evening routine. To get myself into the habit, I purchased a product called The Five Minute Journal created by Intelligent Change and I still use this journal every single day (no this is not a sponsored plug, I just love it that much!). The reason I love this journal so much is that it really does take me just 5 minutes twice a day to complete it's exercises and it prompts me to turn my mind to gratitude (which is very similar to appreciation).
I also practise appreciation as much as possible throughout my day making sure I take moments to stop and consider what I appreciated after each event, interaction or experience. This process gets even better when you share what you appreciated with your loved ones and the people involved in that experience, especially when it includes telling them what you appreciate about them! Who doesn't love that?!
When I need to shift my energy and get into a really high vibin, positive place I do an Appreciation Rampage just like the one above. It is awesome! I feel like I am on Cloud 9, I am high on life and this feeling is BETTER THAN ANYTHING!
Other suggestions for practising appreciation include:
- going on a gratitude walk
- talking to friends, family, colleagues or even strangers about what you appreciate - this is such a game changer for relationships!
- be creative! Lewis Howes, another wonderful mentor of mine changed his voicemail to ask people what they are most grateful for. Love it!
What appreciation practises can you come up with??
One challenge I have faced a number of times, is feeling like I don't have many solid friendships. Whenever these feelings surface, I eventually find my way back to appreciation which always turns things around. I start by appreciating all the amazing friendships I already have in my life and all the wonderful friendships to come. Instead of seeing where my friendships might be lacking, suddenly I am able to appreciate all the great things about them.
Every time I do this I end up attracting more relationships with those same qualities I appreciate. It's also how I believe I met my fiancé - but that's another story!
Incorporating appreciation into your day to day routine will change the course and direction of your life (it's definitely changed mine!) as it shifts you into an abundance mindset, which in turn attracts more abundance and love into your life. When you are feeling unfulfilled, lost, disconnected, sad, afraid or just in a bit of a slump, appreciation is the perfect exercise to instantly turn that energy around and put you into the positive, high vibin' energy you want! And it is a very simple step to take on the journey of changing your life and the lives of those around you.
