Action 6: LISTEN TO YOUR INTUITION

Believe in YOU...

Do you struggle to make decisions? Are you feeling unfulfilled?

Do you feel unable to figure out what it is you want?

Stop looking outside yourself for answers and instead... look within.  

What do you want?

This question is seemingly so simple and yet for many of us it is one of the most difficult questions to answer. This makes things particularly challenging when this little question is one we ask ourselves so often, with the answer being our key to happiness. 

What do I want?

When we think about what we want, we have learned to seek answers outside of ourselves – we automatically seek external validation in place of our own.  For example, What should I do? is a question more commonly asked to someone else, rather than to ourselves.

On top of this, we have the belief that whatever we want also resides outside of ourselves.

And so, we wade through life collecting things and adding to them to us.  Seeking validation from everyone but ourselves.  Hoping that by adding more this will make us more appealing.  If I just do this, THEN I will achieve happiness.

Always wanting more, getting more and yet only ever achieving a fleeting sense of satisfaction.   

This pattern is what prevents you from answering this important little question that holds all THE answers.

What you want does not require anything outside yourself to fulfill it and it certainly cannot be answered by anyone but yourself.  

What you need to understand instead is HOW you connect to that part of yourself that holds the answers and that is where listening to your INTUITION comes in.

What is Intuition?

Intuition is that joyful, peaceful, loving and all knowing part of us that resides in every single one of us.  Intuition is not learned, it is innate. Hence, it is the part of us that is not fearful.

People might refer to their intuition as their inner knowing, inner guidance system, Spirit, Soul – there are many names.  It is what connects us to one another and as Deepak Chopra says your intuition “is a way to eavesdrop on the mind of the universe”.

Your intuition speaks to you through feelings and sensations.  It will tell you when something is wrong or right – through your body, through emotion and sensation. It is that gut instinct you might feel where you just know and yet you cannot explain logically why.  You ask a question and feel the answer in your body.

And by allowing and welcoming our intuition to guide us, we are able to make decisions from a place of love, peace, joy and knowing rather than from a place of lack, separation and fear.

Why are we not all being guided by our Intuition?

As children we have the best use of our intuition.  This is because our Ego minds, which are learned, are less developed.   So we make decisions mostly in our intuitive states, following what feels good and what doesn’t.  As we grow up we are introduced more and more to our ego mind, as we gather information telling us what is right and wrong from outside of ourselves.  And this is where most of us increasingly operate from as we get older.

Our ego mind is that non-stop thinking, fearful, judgmental, separatist part of ourselves that is learned throughout our lifetime with the sole purpose of keeping us alive.  A pretty admirable and necessary purpose wouldn't you say?  But with the intuition often leading us on uncertain paths or rather paths which cannot be explained through logic and reason, this places the ego mind and our intuition often in conflict. 

Why do we rely on our ego?

We are extremely dependent on our ego mind because for many years it kept us alive through avoiding uncertainty, deprivation and alienation. 

Fast forward to today where we live in a world drowning in choice and over-consumption as result of technological advances.  Our learned fear systems continue to operate like a well oiled machine, without discrimination.   In fact they are so efficient, that we experience fear at the drop of any uncertainty or deprivation.  When we are given the option of certainty or uncertainty then, we naturally err on the side of certainty.  And that is where the ego comes in. 

The intuition however will often lead us to places which logically seem uncertain.  In fact, when you feel resistance it can often be a sign to keep going.  Leaving the ego screaming at us to take the path of least resistance. 

And so, we as a society have learned to operate from the ego mind over our intuition. We learn to look outside of ourselves for our answers and we seek certainty and little change.

However, we are growth-seeking beings and therefore we will not feel fulfilled unless we are growing, changing and evolving.  Growth, change & evolution requires that we listen to our intuition and let it guide us, rather than our ego.

So, how do I reconnect with my Intuition?

The path to reconnecting to your intuition requires you to turn inward, welcome guidance and listen for the answers. For the conversation with your intuition to begin it requires space, silence and awareness. 

A great tool for quieting and separating yourself from the ego mind is meditation.  If you didn’t check out my post about Being Present & Meditation you can find it here which I encourage you to read and try before doing the below exercise.  

With the awareness we have been building between your thinking mind (the ego mind) and ourselves over the Create a Life that is Beautiful program, we pave the way to reconnecting with our intuition.

Action #6 to Create a Life that is Beautiful

This week our daily exercise has 2 parts.  The first step is to spend at least 10 minutes each day listening to your intuition.  I recommend doing this through writing or journaling, but for some people you might prefer speaking to your intuition either in your head or even out loud.  Ask your intuition now: how do you want to communicate with me?

You will be conversing with your intuition through questions, like: What would feel good today?  What do I need to release?  What does my heart truly desire?  Why am I feeling confused? Is this the right path for me?

Make your questions relevant to action you are considering taking now, not in the distant future. 

You ask a question and then you wait in silence listening for the answer.  The quality of your answers, depends on the quality of the questions you ask.  Once you hear an answer, write it down and then consider the answer and ask another question, delving deeper.  What you are seeking is clarity. 

You might find at first that you struggle to hear anything but your ego mind chatting away, that is absolutely okay just have compassion for your ego mind (who is just trying to protect you) and keep listening for your intuition.  The answer from your intuition will likely just pop into your head or speak to you through feelings and sensations - it comes from a place of knowing, love and peace. The answers will never come from a place of fear, lack or scarcity, even when logically it seems an uncertain path.  Beware of "shoulds", for example; "you should do this" - that is the ego.

The second step of this exercise requires you to trust and follow the answers your intuition provides you by taking the action prescribed.  If this is just too scary for you and you aren’t willing to trust yourself, you can do a Fear-Setting exercise like the one Tim Ferriss shares where you assess the consequences of what you are proposing to do and work out how if the worst case scenario happened how you would get back to where you are today.  This exercise also gets you to look at what you lose by not taking the action in question.  You can check this exercise out here.

Still scared? Start with small questions first. Just make sure you LISTEN + ALLOW your inner compass guide you.

Real Life

I was very much in tune with my intuition as a teenager, which led me to some wonderful places.  As a young adult however, I became disconnected to my intuition and holy moly did my intuition let me know!  When you stop listening, your intuition has a great way of getting you to wake up.  You will become aware of it, especially though the feeling of un-fulfillment.  

As I began reconnecting with my intuition, I would write in my Intuition Journal daily.  Some days I would get nothing, or nothing I could be sure was not ego.  However, slowly, but surely, I uncovered my intuitive voice again.  Now I am able to speak to my intuition without writing to it, although I still use my Intuition Journal almost weekly to check in on big questions.  My point is listening to your intuition is a process, you have to dedicate time to getting to know it again and that conversation may change its form over time.  

Wrap Up

Trust your intuition and let it guide you, even when the path it lays before you is uncertain. Accept yourself for where you are, comforting yourself that everything has led to where you are today and the answer for what’s next will be revealed to you at exactly the right time.   

The more we turn inwards and let our own intuition direct the course of our lives, rather than turning outward and letting our ego minds take over, we become more in tune with who we really are and our path to fulfillment. We just have be willing to have the conversation, hold space for the conversation, listen and act trusting that everything is as it should be and in the words of Gabby Bernstein, that: “the universe has your back”.   

So lovely, this week  please have a go every day at holding space for communicating with your intuition and following it's guidance using the 2 part exercise I have set out above. At first you might not be able to hear anything, but by giving yourself the time and space, trust me it will happen.   And when it does, you will be so excited!! So welcome in that intuition and await the beauty that unfolds.
