Start your day feeling great with a magical morning ritual!


Picture this.

I wake up.  I meditate for 10 minutes.  I write in my gratitude journal, also thinking about how I can make today great.  I make my bed.  I do something that brings me joy.  Then I decide what I want to accomplish today, eat breakfast and get dressed for the day.  This is my magical morning ritual.  

I arrive to my workday ready to face my day with intention and feeling joyful.  I have arrived.

Throughout the day exactly what I intended flows to me and so much more.  It’s a great day and I feel so much joy.  I embody my intentions throughout the day, living in alignment with what I value and I finish my day feeling satisfied and joyful.  

Sounds pretty magical right?


This week we give the actions we have learned so far on the Create a Life that is Beautiful journey a time and place to shine.   A magical morning ritual allows us to start our day with intention and in alignment with one of the highest emotions we can experience... joy.  It is a way to ceremoniously start your day, celebrating you and providing what you need & desire. 

When we first wake up, our ‘monkey minds’ are at their least active. We are almost at peace.  This is because we have not had anything from the outside world yet to set them off.   And so, we are gifted a sweet window of opportunity to really maximise the separation of our monkey mind and tap into an unadulterated feeling of joy.

As soon as we reach for our phones however, whether that be to check the news, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, messages or our emails - our ‘monkey minds’ start to run wild. This is when feelings like anxiety, depression, jealousy and fear might set in.  Decisions become harder.  And joy becomes more distant.   And so we step into our day embodying these low level emotions.

What we want to do instead is tap into that feeling of unadulterated joy and align ourselves with its feeling before we are influenced by the outside world.  Through our magical morning ritual we create sacred space for this joy to be embodied.

By tuning into the feeling of joy, we prime our brain for the day ahead.  Getting ready to take action from this high vantage point.  We can really see.  We have elevated our energy, our consciousness and our connection to our self.

We set our intentions for the day from a place of abundance, tuning in to what we truly desire, want and need.

Today will be a great day.  And so it is.

By starting our day through the lens of joy we experience more joy and satisfaction throughout our day.

 Like attracts like. 
The better it gets, the better it gets.


Just for this week, make the commitment to start your day a little earlier so that you can complete the 5 steps below as soon as you wake up each day.   Consider this 7 day period a trial of your magical morning ritual.

N.B. Make sure your phone is on airplane mode each night before you go to sleep.  The idea is to not turn your phone off airplane mode until after you have completed your magical morning ritual below.

Your Magical Morning Ritual

When you wake up, follow the below steps:

1.  Start your day with 10 minutes of meditation.  (If you need some help with this step check out my post all about meditation here.) Note: you don’t even need to leave the bed to do this exercise.  Just do whatever you need to do to make it happen. Be playful.  Embody joy.

2. Write down 3 things you appreciate in your life today and 3 ways you could make today extra awesome.  (If you need help on appreciation check out my earlier post here).  Tap into that feeling of appreciation and excitement for the day ahead.

An amazing resource I start my day with for these exercises is The Five Minute Journal.

3.  Make your bed. Making your bed in the morning makes you feel prepared and organised for the day ahead.

4. Do something for 30 minutes that will bring you joy.  Whatever that may be. Some ideas? Yoga; Walk; Dance; Sing; Read; Paint; Talk to a friend; Draw; Run; Bake. It could be anything!  It just needs to bring you joy.  Look at the list of activities that bring you joy that you created when we did Action #7.

5. Spend 5 minutes jotting down your intentions for the day by asking How do I want to feel? What would leave me feeling satisfied today? This step will see you connecting to your intuition.  If you want any further guidance on how you connect to your intuition check out my post here.   

This is your magical morning ritual! Now you can turn your phone off airplane mode and begin your day from this place of joy and intention you have created.

The above steps take approximately 50 minutes - 1 hour in total to complete.  Make sure you go to bed each night a little earlier than usual so that you still get enough sleep.  


When we start our day in a way that lifts our spirits and prioritises our needs we start our day on a high. We create sacred space for ourselves and the day ahead.  We become intentional. We live in alignment with our highest purpose – joy.

Many of the world’s most successful people swear by their morning ritual.  Their hour of power! It is the part of the day you can really experience freedom (from your own mind!), are able to connect with your intuition and experience flow, really finding what feels good.

It also helps us make self-care a habit.  Our cup is full before we even leave for the day.  And now we have a joyful energy to give others.

Why wouldn’t we save the one part of our day that can’t be affected by others for ourselves? To take care of our needs?

She also has a wonderful online course, which I am also a member of, called Flow With Intention Online.  The reason I love her work on this topic is that she explains concepts like manifesting and alignment from a trans-rational/Law of Attraction lens as well as a rational, scientific lens.  This work will explain why the frequency or emotion you embody attracts more of the same to you throughout your day.


I prefer to use the term ‘ritual’, rather than ‘routine’ when talking about how we set ourselves up in the morning.  This is because the word ritual for me prescribes more presence. While you do want to reduce decision making for the first couple of steps in your morning ritual, so that your initial tiredness doesn’t get in the way, you will be making decisions.  And these decisions will come from a place of intuition, which of course requires presence. 


I am not a morning person.  However, the times in my life where I have invested in a magical morning ritual for myself have been the times I have seriously thrived.  Every single time.  Years ago I had a magical morning ritual which consisted of my going to the gym at 5:30am in the morning with my gym buddy.  Now my magical morning looks more like the above.

The important thing is to do what works for you.  Just do it in a way that works.  For meditating I often don’t even leave the bed.  I lay down, lights still off, doing my guided meditation or no guidance at all – whatever I feel like at the time.  For years I struggled to get up do this because I thought I needed to leave the bed... until I didn’t.  Done is better than good (as the wonderful Elizabeth Gilbert says!). The reason I recommend doing your meditation as part of your morning ritual is because it’s the time of the day where your monkey mind will be quietest, therefore making it easier to develop some separation and also it is a great way to bring yourself into the day with ease.  A kind of half way point between asleep and awake.  A way to also activate your intuition and get intentional.

If however meditating is just not for you, skip it altogether. 

Find what feels good for you – the goal is simply to align yourself with the feeling of joy in your hour of power.


A magical morning ritual is a fabulous way to start your day with intention and align yourself with that super high feeling of joy.  The ritual gives you a space to put YOU first so that you are in your highest mind-set and frequency as you face the rest of your day.  It sets the tone of your day, attracting more of that same emotion into your experience. 

So start your day this week with a ritual that brings you joy and see all the magic that unfolds!
