Action 16: Move it

This article is for anyone wanting to create a life they love, enjoy and are inspired by.  A life that is truly beautiful!!

"The body is living art. Your movement through time and space is art. A painter has brushes. You have your body." -  Anna Halprin

you've got to move it!

The second part to treating your beautiful body like the precious temple it is, is to make sure that you are... moving it!

Move it, move it!

Our bodies need to move.  They want us to move them. We need it to feel good, to feel healthy, to be healthy, to feel energetic, to feel happy and to express ourselves.

Have you ever danced out your emotions or feelings?

That's right our body helps us to express ourselves, our energy, our feelings, our emotions... and our truth!

If you stopped thinking and let your body lead the way, how would it move?

Movement is so much more than just about maintaining or losing weight to look good.  Movement helps us to:

  • FEEL good
  • Shift energy, especially those negative vibes. Ever been in a bad mood and then went for a work out and felt a 1,000 times better afterwards? It’s because you have shifted your energy!
  • Express ourselves
  • Discover, uncover and remember ... our truth.
  • Practice creativity
  • Be present by connecting to the body, rather than the thinking mind
  • Prepare our body for meditation.

Movement is a physical, a mental and spiritual practice.

And the best news is, moving our bodies (exercising!) doesn’t have to be a chore. MAKE IT FUN!  That is my second most important rule. :-)

What is my most important rule? To start from where you are. Accept your body for where it is.  Love and accept it fully.  And ask yourself: What would feel good today – what movement would feel like pleasure for my soul?

There are so many ways we can move our body.  We can:

  • dance
  • walk
  • run
  • swim
  • go to the gym and do aerobics, or weights, or hop on a cardio machine
  • join a boot camp or F45 team if that’s your jam
  • rock climb or boulder,
  • do a Qoya class - seriously so amazing for women (here is a link to some you can try at home)
  • do some yoga – any kind (vinyasa flow, yin, bikram, acroyoga, Future Sounds of Yoga ... the list goes on)
  • try some resistance training
  • acrobatics
  • try some squats between meetings
  • go on a hike

The list goes on!

In less than a minute of movement, you can come back into your body. In less than 20, you can release any stagnant or stuck energy, ground yourself in the present moment, and embrace the journey you are in, realigned with dreams that you are being called towards. - QOYA (Rochelle Schieck)

Just anything to get your body moving every single day.

Let's start now!

This week on the Create a Life that is Beautiful journey we are going to make a commitment to ourselves to get our bodies moving each day for 30 minutes to 1 hour doing something that sounds fun!  That’s it!

Ask yourself: What would feel good right now?

Take note after each day how you feel after making time for movement.  Do you feel clearer? Happier? Lighter? More energetic?

And if you want to take things a little further, also take a look at your step count (I like to use  my phone’s pedometer (under the health app) but if you have a Fitbit or a proper pedometer use that as its probably more accurate) – to see how many steps you take each day and try and get up to 10,000 every single day.

For me, 10,000 steps equates to about an hour and a half of walking every single day.  It was amazing to me to see the results of simply getting in those 10,000 steps each day!  I have noticed not only the weight benefits but also the mental clarity.  A walk home after work ahhhh what a way to clear the brain! A walk before work what a great way to start the day doing something fun.  Even better make it a gratitude walk – there is so much to be thankful for and gratitude is contagious.

If you can walk somewhere instead of taking public transport do it! Pop in some headphones and listen to an audiobook or a podcast.  Learning + moving = THE BEST! You can do it!

Most importantly of all – you need to listen to your body when it comes to movement.  This is what grounds you into the present moment, connecting you to your body and allowing you to express your truth in that moment.

Ask yourself: What would feel good right now?  Do not compare yourself to anyone else out there. Just check in with your bod every day and make time to give it what it needs.

For women, we work on a 28-30 day cycle.  We go through periods of yang (masculine) and yin (feminine) energy which means our energy levels and hormones change throughout our cycle.  This impacts the type of movement that feels best for our body.  We are not operating on a 24 hour cycle like our male counterparts! So us beautiful women need to pay extra attention to what our body is crying out for.

Throughout my 29 day cycle the type of exercise I do each day changes.  During my yang phases around days 8 to 22 (for me!), I have more energy to burn so I love to go on long runs or do interval running or resistance training or some sort of aerobic exercise.  I will easily do 10,000 steps each day and some movement and usually I will also do some yoga on top!

During days 1 to 7 and 23 to 29 however my energy levels drop and this means I tend to concentrate on walking, yoga and longer meditations (like Kundalini Yoga) or Qoya.  Sure, sometimes I will feel more energetic and so I might do something more high intensity but generally this is how my movement for the month looks.

And some days, I literally do nothing because that is what my body needs. Rest is just as important.

Most importantly, each day I check in with my body and ask it: What would feel like pleasure for my soul today? A phrase I heard from the wonderful Jess Lively.

I love starting my day with some form of quick exercise like the 7 minute work out, and I love to do my walking throughout the day at different times and any exercise either in the late afternoon or evening.  For years, I struggled to get up super early to exercise.  The only time it really worked was when I had a gym buddy who I would be answerable to (Mel, Mitch, Tegan you guys are the best!).  While this was great, I always felt so ashamed that I couldn’t rely on myself.  Today, I realise that that particular schedule just didn’t work best for me and what I needed to change simply finding the time when I would simply get it done!

Making time for movement is now a priority of mine every single day and I do it because it is vital for my body and fills me up physically, mentally and spiritually.

Making time to give your body the movement that it needs is essential to our physical, mental and spiritual health.  Move because it feels good.  Be present and choose what feels good for you today.

You are more than worth it!
