MY BODY IS A TEMPLE

Look down at that precious body of yours, right now! Feel into your muscles, your flesh and the beautiful skin on your legs, your arms, your chest, your stomach, your back, your toosh!  Feel all your organs: your brain, your lungs, your heart, your stomach....

Looking at your hands, remind yourself that this is my body.  THIS IS MY BODY!

Your body, my body - is a temple.  Without our body we do not get to live.  We do not get to do all the things we want to do. Appreciate your body just for that - allowing you to live

Love and accept your body, it is your one true partner for life. 

Really accept it. No body shame here.  Accept your body as it is right now. We all have different bodies, with different shapes and sizes.  We aren't all meant to be tall and lean or short and petite or curvy, we are all different!  And it is our difference that is so special... celebrate your uniqueness.  Celebrate your body exactly as it is. 

And then after you experience that immense gratitude for that beautiful body of yours, I want you to promise that you will treat your body as a temple! 

When we take care of our body, our body responds by fully supporting us in all that we do. 

how do i treat my body as a temple?

Our body just like our thoughts, our energy, our mind, our hearts!... needs to be protected, honoured and respected.   We need to listen to our body.  What do you need my dear body?  What do you need today?

Just as the people we spend our time with, the thoughts we have, the actions we take and the emotions we experience – what we choose to put in and on our body affects our experience. 

We need to nourish our body.  We need to fuel it with the healthy, nutritious foods + drinks which give us energy and make us feel vibrant!. And we need to make sure the products we use on our skin and which we breath in around our home also support our body. 

So this week on the Create a Life that is Beautiful journey, we are getting intentional with what makes up the food we eat, the drinks we drink, the products we use on our skin and in our homes.   

NOURISHing YOUR BODY

Use food + drink to nourish that beautiful body of yours. Think natural products that come from the ground!  

Many of us use food today to experience pleasure, rather than to nourish our body.  We fill our bodies with processed foods that clog our system instead of those beautiful fresh, vibrant and nourishing ingredients, like fruit and vegetables that make our bodies feel amazing. 

And when we try to remove these processed foods from our lives, our system, our body... we emotionally feel their absence.  And this is why we eat them.  Processed foods cause our blood sugar levels to immediately spike, making us feel momentarily good, only to crash soon after.  So we feel like we need something else to make us feel better.  So we eat something else. It is an emotional and physical roller coaster and we get stuck in this cycle of eating to make us feel better.  Rather than eating to nourish our beautiful body and leave it feeling satisfied and full of energy. 

That is, unless we get intentional with the foods we consume. 

Instead of processed foods, choose whole foods - there are so many to choose from! Fuel your body with these 90% of the time and your body will thank you for it. 

Check out here a list of 50 whole foods to get you started.  As for drink - think water. Lots of water - nothing else quenchs your thirst like some good, clean water. 

PRODUCTS WE USE ON OUR SKIN + IN OUR HOMES

Just as the food and drink we consume affects our body so too do the products we use on our body and in our home.

Did you know our skin is the largest organ of our body? That's right! It is. So it makes sense that what we put on our body, like make up, skin care products, hair products and perfumes needs to be products which support our body also.  Unfortunately, there are many harmful chemicals found in these products and if you knew what was in them you would never put them on your skin! 

The same goes for products we use around the home, like cleaning products.  We breath in these products, they touch our skin and many have also been found to contain harmful chemicals which yes keep the place clean and smelling good, but are making us sick!

OUR WEEKLY CHALLENGE TO CREATE A LIFE THAT IS BEAUTIFUL

This week on the Create a Life that is Beautiful journey we are going take a look at the food + drink we are consuming and the products we use.  We are going to de-clutter and replace the stuff clogging up our systems with the stuff that supports our bodies :-)

Here are our steps:

1.     Keep a food diary for the first 2 days of the week and note down the foods that you consume and how they make you feel. Make a note whether they are whole food products or not. Also make a note whether you are eating when you are physically hungry or emotionally hungry.  Is your stomach growling? Or are you eating out of boredom or to make you feel a certain way? If you are not physically hungry... stop eating! 

2.     For the rest of the week, replace the foods that are not whole foods with whole foods.  Do your research on what makes up whole foods. Make a note of what you eat and how this way of eating makes you feel. Also make sure you are drinking 8 cups of water per day. Continue eating only when you are physically hungry.  (My rule of thumb is to eat until I am 80% full, so that I feel like I could go on a light jog immediately after eating and I do not wait until I am starving to eat, but at the first signs of physical hunger).

Tip: if a recipe has something you don’t want to eat, then sub it for something else.  I do this with so many recipes that have tofu, or meat, or white rice or a sauce that is full of sugar – I just sub it, or ditch it altogether.  Cooking doesn’t need to be hard.

3.   Go through your home: your bathroom, your kitchen.. anywhere where you have products you use on your skin or to clean with.  Remove anything that contains the following chemicals:

  • Parabens: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, butylparaben and benzylparaben
  • Phthalates
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
  • Formaldehyde
  • Propylene glycol
  • Benzophenone, PABA, avobenzone, homosalate and ethoxycinnmate
  • And anything on this list

Do your research and know exactly what is going in and on your body. :-)

I recommend to every single woman I know to check out Alissa Vitti of Flo Living's website and her book The Woman Code.  She explains so much about our feminine cycle, the foods which support our cycle, products which don't and what to avoid.   

These resources have explained so much to me about my body and have empowered me so that I have been able to support my beautiful hormones and body naturally.  

Another wonderful resources is a book called: If I'm So Smart, Why Can't I Lose Weight? by Brooke Castillo.  This book talks about emotional eating and I found extremely helpful in understanding how our brains and bodies work and why we emotionally eat and how to stop. 

REAL LIFE

The good news is today we have so much information available to us to educate ourselves on what products are best to support our bodies and to make sure that the products we pick are not harming our beautiful bodies.

We have so much power as a consumer simply with the choices we make in what we buy.  Want more whole food products? Stop buying all the processed stuff out there.  Want more natural skin care products that are not full of harmful chemicals? Stop buying them.  Write to the companies you usually use and let them know, hey I used to love your product but now that I know you use x and that is harmful to my body, so I cannot buy it anymore.  Companies respond because they want to keep selling their products. 

Exercise your power to choose.

WRAP UP

Love and accept your beautiful body as it is.  Appreciate and be grateful for your body.  Love, nurture, cherish, honour, respect and protect your body.  Really understand the impact of what you put in and on your body.  Treat it like a temple! In the words of a beautiful friend of mine, "without your health, you have nothing".
